Equinoxes and solstices
The astronomical seasons begin at the equinoxes and solstices. The dates below are in Coordinated Universal Time; in some time zones the event falls on the next or previous day. In the southern hemisphere, the seasons are reversed: the June solstice is the start of winter.

Leap years
The Earth takes about 365.2422 days to orbit the Sun. A 365-day calendar would drift by almost a quarter of a day each year, so the Gregorian calendar adds 29 February in leap years. The rule is: every year divisible by 4 is a leap year, except years divisible by 100, which are only leap years if they are also divisible by 400. That keeps the calendar within about one day of the seasons over 3,000 years.
The next leap years are 2028, 2032, 2036, 2040, 2044, 2048.

How many days are in a year?
A common year has 365 days and a leap year has 366, with the extra day added as 29 February. 2026 has 365 days.
When is the next leap year?
The next leap years are 2028, 2032, 2036, 2040. A year is a leap year if it is divisible by 4, except century years, which must be divisible by 400 — so 2000 was a leap year but 2100 will not be.
How many weeks are in a year?
A year has 52 weeks and one or two extra days. Under the ISO week system, most years have 52 numbered weeks and some have 53; 2026 has 53.
Can I reuse an old calendar?
