What counts as sunrise?
Sunrise is the moment the top edge of the Sun clears a flat horizon — not its centre. Because the atmosphere bends light, you actually see the Sun about half a degree before it is geometrically above the horizon. Together that puts official sunrise when the Sun's centre is 0.833° below the horizon, the standard used by almanacs and by this page.
Light arrives well before that, in three stages of dawn:
- Astronomical dawn (Sun 18° below the horizon): the faintest glow begins; the sky is no longer fully dark for astronomers.
- Nautical dawn (12°): the horizon becomes visible at sea — sailors could once take star sights against it.
- Civil dawn (6°): enough light to be outdoors without lamps. In Indian tradition, Brahma muhurta — the pre-dawn period for prayer and study — begins about 96 minutes before sunrise.
Hills, buildings and your own height change what you see: from a 10th-floor window the Sun appears a minute or so earlier than at street level.
Why the earliest sunrise isn't on the longest day
If sunrise simply tracked day length, the earliest sunrise would fall on the June solstice. It doesn't: in London the earliest sunrise comes about four days before the solstice, and the latest sunrise about ten days after the December solstice. The reason is that solar noon itself drifts through the year.
Earth's orbit is an ellipse and its axis is tilted, so the Sun's position doesn't advance evenly across the sky. The difference between clock noon and the moment the Sun is highest — the equation of time — swings between about 16 minutes early (early November) and 14 minutes late (mid-February). Around the solstices, day length is barely changing, so this drift in solar noon wins and pulls sunrise away from the solstice date. The closer you are to the equator, the smaller the change in day length and the bigger the effect: in Chennai the earliest sunrise is weeks away from the solstice.

Earliest and latest are compared in standard time, so the jumps when clocks change for daylight saving are left out; the times shown are the local clock time on that day.

Frequently asked questions
What time is sunrise tomorrow?
The panel at the top shows tomorrow's sunrise for the city you pick, or for your exact location if you allow it, in that place's local time, along with first light, golden hour and how much earlier or later it is than today.
How much earlier is sunrise each day?
It depends on the season and your latitude. In London in late March and late September sunrise moves by about 2 minutes a day; near the solstices it barely changes. In Mumbai it rarely moves by more than about a minute a day.
Is sunrise the same time everywhere in my country?
No. Within one time zone, sunrise is later the further west you are — in India, which uses one time zone, the Sun rises in Kohima more than an hour and a half before it does in western Gujarat.
What is the difference between dawn and sunrise?
Dawn is the start of twilight, when the sky begins to brighten while the Sun is still below the horizon; sunrise is when the Sun's upper edge appears. Civil dawn is usually 20–30 minutes before sunrise in the tropics and longer at high latitudes.
Why do you list the earliest sunrise before the longest day?
Because solar noon drifts during the year (the equation of time). Around the June solstice solar noon is getting later each day, which pushes sunrise later even while days are still lengthening.
