About Dates & Time in Ethiopia
Ethiopia uses East Africa Time (UTC+3), but official and daily life follows the Ethiopian calendar — 12 months of 30 days plus a short 13th month (Pagume) of 5 or 6 days. The Ethiopian year runs about 7–8 years behind the Gregorian one and begins on Enkutatash, 11 September (12 September before a Gregorian leap year). Many Ethiopians also count hours from sunrise rather than midnight.

Christian holidays follow the Ethiopian Orthodox calendar, so Genna (Christmas) falls on 7 January and Fasika (Easter) usually comes later than Western Easter. Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha and Mawlid are also public holidays but depend on moon sighting, so we omit them here — see our Data Sources page.
