The twelve months and where their names come from

Our month names come from the Roman calendar. The earliest Roman year started in March, which is why September to December are named after the numbers seven to ten, even though they are now the ninth to twelfth months.

    #MonthDaysNamed after
1January31Janus, the two-faced Roman god of doorways and beginnings, looking back at the old year and forward to the new.
2February28 / 29Februa, a Roman festival of purification held in the middle of the month.
3March31Mars, the Roman god of war. It was the first month of the earliest Roman calendar, when campaigns resumed after winter.
4April30Uncertain. The traditional explanation is the Latin aperire, "to open", for the opening of buds and flowers.
5May31Maia, a goddess of growth, fertility and spring.
6June30Juno, queen of the Roman gods and protector of marriage.
7July31Julius Caesar, who reformed the calendar. It was previously Quintilis, "the fifth month".
8August31The emperor Augustus. It was previously Sextilis, "the sixth month".
9September30Septem, "seven" — it was the seventh month when the Roman year began in March.
10October31Octo, "eight", from the same March-based count.
    11November30Novem, "nine".
    12December31Decem, "ten".

Remembering the days in each month

The old rhyme begins "Thirty days hath September, April, June and November". Or use the knuckle method: make a fist and count the months across your knuckles and the dips between them. Every month that lands on a knuckle has 31 days, and every month in a dip has 30, except February. July and August both land on knuckles, because you start again on the first knuckle after July.

    Monthly calendar questions

How many days are in each month?

January, March, May, July, August, October and December have 31 days. April, June, September and November have 30. February has 28 days, or 29 in a leap year.

How many working days are in a month?

Counting Monday to Friday, a month has between 20 and 23 weekdays, depending on its length and which weekday it starts on. The month-by-month table on this page lists the exact number for each month of 2026 and 2027; subtract any public holidays that apply to you.

Why does February have only 28 days?

In the Roman calendar reformed by King Numa, February was placed at the end of the year and given the leftover days. When Julius Caesar reorganised the calendar in 46 BC, February kept its short length and received the extra leap day every four years.

Which months start on the same weekday?

In a common year, January and October always start on the same weekday, as do February, March and November, and April and July. In a leap year the pairs shift: January matches April and July, and February matches August.
